Daily Divine Word:
March 27, 26 – Friday, Fifth Week of Lent: Does my deed speak my word?
Genesis 17:3-9; John 8:51-59
Jesus responds, does not react: The gospel relates an event where Jesus overwhelmingly faces opposition and hostility. The religious leaders picked up stone to stone Jesus accusing him of blasphemy. The religious leaders were unwilling to break their prejudices and see there is something more than mere humanness in Jesus. The law of Moses instructs death penalty for the crime of blasphemy: “He who blasphemes the name of the Lord shall be put to death; all the people shall stone him (Lev 24:16).” Jesus responds to the people who were ready with stones to through at him. Jesus did not use his power or influence to intimidate or threaten them instead he explains the mission entrusted to him by his Father. Jesus was not carried away by the reaction from people but handles the situation prudently. A crisis requires not an emotional or impulsive reaction but a slow and prudent response.
Does my deed speak my word: Jesus responded to the people standing with stones in hands. He explained the good works he did. He showed no contradiction between his words and deeds. He used his works to defend himself. Jesus did not base his claims on what he said but what he did. The many good works he did, such as healing the sick, raising the dead and feeding the hungry; these actions obviously came from God. Jesus challenged his opponents to accept his works if they could not accept his words. One can argue eloquently but deeds stand beyond arguments.
Our Takeaway
- Jesus did not use his power or influence to intimidate or threaten his opponents instead he explains about his mission. Father. Jesus was not carried away by the reaction from people but handles the situation prudently. A crisis requires not an emotional or impulsive reaction but a slow and prudent response.
